It takes a special kind of dedication. Auburn has produced some of the best athletes in the world. Gold medalists. Heisman Trophy winners. MVPs.<\/p>\n<p>Being an Auburn engineer is a big deal. It takes a special kind of dedication. Auburn has produced some of the best engineers in the world. Astronauts. Inventors. CEO of the world\u2019s first trillion-dollar company.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; to be both? To be able to summon that level of skill and commitment and passion and discipline? Well, there\u2019s work, there\u2019s hard work. And then there\u2019s the work required to be an Auburn Engineering student-athlete.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some stories about those putting in the hardest work of all, who are living out the \u201cTherefore\u201d in the <a href=\"https:\/\/auburn.edu\/about\/creed.php\">Auburn Creed<\/a> in ways few others do.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10345\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/cropped-2025-02-24T153717.585-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/cropped-2025-02-24T153717.585-1.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/cropped-2025-02-24T153717.585-1-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/cropped-2025-02-24T153717.585-1-674x380.jpg 674w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Mason Mathias \u2014 Fluid mechanics<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If George Petrie was alive today, he\u2019d probably agree \u2014 Mason Mathias really took all that stuff about education and clean sports to heart.<br \/>\nThe senior swimmer from Leeds chose Auburn because it was the best of both worlds. And he conquered both of them.<\/p>\n<p>Five All-American honors. He holds the Auburn record in the 500-yard freestyle, and ranks 11th nationally. Plus, the second-fastest time in school history in the 1,000-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>But the numbers he\u2019s logged out of the pool are even more impressive. We\u2019re not talking just a semester. Not just a year. That cumulative 4.0 GPA? It spans his entire academic career \u2014 at least so far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I still have a few tough classes to go that could change things, but I\u2019m not going down without a fight,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ll see if it lasts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Southeastern Conference didn\u2019t need to wait around to see.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the folks in charge of naming the 2024-25 <a href=\"https:\/\/eng.auburn.edu\/news\/2025\/02\/mason-mathias-sec-scholar-athlete-of-the-year.html\">SEC Men\u2019s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year<\/a> probably had it easier than ever \u2014 Mason Mathias, hands down.<br \/>\nIt isn\u2019t the first academic distinction for the freestyle phenom \u2014 nowhere close.<\/p>\n<p>Mathias earned All-SEC Second Team honors twice (2023-24), was a three-time College Swimming &amp; Diving Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American (2022-24) and achieved College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-American status in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Then, there are the three Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll selections (2022-24) and two CSC Academic All-District Team awards (2023-24).<\/p>\n<p>And, well, there may be more in store.<\/p>\n<p>After graduation, Mathias is considering taking a year to work in industry before diving into grad school. Where? At the moment, he\u2019s not sure.<br \/>\nBut he\u2019s pretty positive \u2014 Auburn will be in contention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Auburn, I felt like I could achieve highly in the pool and in the classroom because of what Auburn Engineering has to offer,\u201d he said. \u201cI believe that now more than ever, so staying here would be kind of a no-brainer.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-14856416\"><\/div>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/267871\/episodes\/14856416-navier-strokes-equation.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-14856416&#038;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10351\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_0252-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_0252-scaled.jpg 2560w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_0252-1800x1200.jpg 1800w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_0252-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_0252-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_0252-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_0252-1200x800.jpg 1200w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_0252-600x400.jpg 600w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/IMG_0252-75x50.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Emma Grace Boyd \u2014 Finding balance<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Her best score so far is a 9.825 on the uneven bars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C_BkUzgyoEM\/?img_index=2\">against the University of Georgia<\/a>, the other big school that recruited her.<\/p>\n<p>But talk to Emma Grace Boyd for five minutes, and it\u2019s obvious: a Perfect 10 is coming. If not in gymnastics \u2014 though she is that good \u2014 then in the real world. The Orlando-hailing sophomore in biosystems engineering already has her eyes locked on the spot, and she\u2019s doing everything necessary to stick the landing. The field she wants. The role she wants. It\u2019s awesome to behold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad, Stan Boyd, went to Auburn. He played baseball for two years and majored in biochemistry. He\u2019s in water treatment, which sparked my interest in biosystems engineering,\u201d Boyd said. \u201cWater treatment is a stable and growing industry. I\u2019m interested in sales. Engineering will be a great background for that, and gymnastics has taught me the things necessary to get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Things like commitment. Things like planning, not trying to cram. Things like being on time, which means showing up 15 minutes early. To practice, to class, to everything, social life included. You\u2019d expect a gymnast to know a thing or two about balance. You\u2019d expect an engineer to know a thing or two about efficiency. Her approach to each 24 hours, especially given what she does with them, is next level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years, and especially since coming to Auburn, I\u2019ve figured out my workflow,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve learned how much time I need for work and how much time I need to set aside for breaks from school and the gym. She goes after it. Take her most memorable game. She surrendered one goal, but after that nothing got past her. It would have been nice for it to have been in the SEC Championship. Or the NCAAs. But, you know, doing it while representing Ghana \u2014 she has dual citizenship \u2014 in the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women\u2019s World Cup was cool, too.<\/p>\n<p>But taking the initiative isn\u2019t just the way the mechanical engineering sophomore plays soccer. It\u2019s the way she lives. Take her recruitment process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine was a bit different than most people,\u201d said Sapong, who is from Johns Creek, Georgia. \u201cI wasn\u2019t committed by my senior year of high school. I applied to Auburn because, I mean, the engineering school is amazing, one of the best. And then, once I got in, I just emailed the coaches and said, \u2018Hey, I have some film, come watch me play.\u2019 And then, I had a couple of calls with the coaches. They came to watch me play at a showcase, and they liked what they saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sapong liked what she saw, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went on a visit and loved it here basically before the tour even began,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I saw the engineering buildings, it was just amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Sapong spent most of her time in Wiggins Hall, paying special attention to biomechanics.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, she\u2019s eyeing a career in the biomedical field. She\u2019s thinking of looking into Auburn&#8217;s Business-Engineering-Technology minor. And she wants to get an MBA.<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t think I want to continue playing soccer professionally,\u201d she said, \u201cOnce I reach my potential in college, I think I\u2019ll be satisfied. I just want to work hard for the next three years, but who knows, things could change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, Ghana could come calling again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, I did redshirt my freshman year. So, yeah, I do have that fifth year of eligibility,\u201d she said. \u201cMaybe I could play while doing my master\u2019s. That would be fun. But after that, I just want to get a job, start working and make money.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-15987760\"><\/div>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/267871\/episodes\/15987760-goal-keeping.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-15987760&#038;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10341\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/cropped-96.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/cropped-96.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/cropped-96-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/05\/cropped-96-674x380.jpg 674w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Shelby Balding \u2014 The ambassador<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>She\u2019ll be honest. Growing up in Denver, Shelby Balding had never heard of Auburn, not really.<\/p>\n<p>Now, she can\u2019t stop talking about it.<\/p>\n<p>As a Cupola Engineering Ambassador, the civil engineering junior is tasked with selling Auburn Engineering to prospective students. Of all her pursuits \u2014 class, cross country, juggling \u2014 that\u2019s the easiest. She just puts herself back in their shoes. When it was time to start looking at schools in 2022, Auburn University caught her eye. It had engineering. It had cross country. And it just had&#8230; something else. Something she hadn\u2019t seen elsewhere, or at least not on her first visit. The family had flown to an Ivy League school. It wasn\u2019t a love connection.<\/p>\n<p>Down in Alabama, on the other hand, sparks flew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I visited Auburn, it was just awesome. I loved the team, and then I took the engineering tour,\u201d she said. \u201cI could just tell how much the faculty cared about their students, and about where they\u2019d wind up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for where she\u2019ll wind up? It\u2019s still to be determined \u2014 at least in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not exactly sure what I want to do with my degree,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes I think I\u2019d be more interested in structures. Then I\u2019ll think I\u2019d like to do something with water quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But at least for the summer, it\u2019s off to Juneau for a bridge inspecting internship with Alaska\u2019s Department of Transportation. The civil and environmental department sent her an email advertising the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Balding clicked immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s actually a perfect example of the support you\u2019ll get here,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you\u2019re a student-athlete and come to Auburn, you get that southern feel and sense of family. You get nice weather.
