{"id":9429,"date":"2023-12-11T10:50:09","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T10:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=9429"},"modified":"2023-12-12T16:30:42","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T16:30:42","slug":"mechanical-achieving-a-cleaner-future-for-the-transportation-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=9429","title":{"rendered":"Mechanical: Achieving a cleaner future for the transportation sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9597\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2023\/12\/mechanical-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2023\/12\/mechanical-1.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2023\/12\/mechanical-1-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2023\/12\/mechanical-1-674x380.jpg 674w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mitigating the environmental impact of meeting the world\u2019s rapidly increasing transportation energy demands is a problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The National Science Foundation (NSF) thinks Nick Tsolas may have a solution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The assistant professor of mechanical engineering recently received a $518,000 NSF CAREER Award to investigate low-temperature plasma assisted combustion of oxygenated fuels as a potential alternative to achieving a cleaner and sustainable future for the transportation sector. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe overall objective of this project is to examine how we can leverage unique chemical and physical properties of low-temperature plasmas (LTP) to improve the energy extraction and efficiency of renewable fuels with potentially less environmental harm,\u201d Tsolas said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cExperimentally, we have developed two unique experiments to study various aspects of this phenomena, including a plasma-coupled flow reactor to study fundamental plasma-chemical interactions, and a plasma-coupled rapid compression machine,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although the application of the project was meant to address energy issues in the transportation sector, Tsolas expects that fundamental outcomes from his research can also be adopted to support other LTP-based applications, such as micro-propulsion for CubeSats, pollution remediation and valorizing carbon dioxide to manufacture value-added fuels and electro-fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mitigating the environmental impact of meeting the world\u2019s rapidly increasing transportation energy demands is a problem.The National Science Foundation (NSF) thinks Nick Tsolas may have a solution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":49,"featured_media":9597,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1057],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Mechanical: Achieving a cleaner future for the transportation sector &raquo;
