{"id":9431,"date":"2023-12-11T10:57:15","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T10:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=9431"},"modified":"2023-12-12T16:37:01","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T16:37:01","slug":"biosystems-researchers-reimagine-controlled-environment-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=9431","title":{"rendered":"Biosystems: Researchers reimagine controlled environment agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9615\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2023\/12\/biosystems-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2023\/12\/biosystems-1.jpeg 1000w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2023\/12\/biosystems-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2023\/12\/biosystems-1-674x380.jpeg 674w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While controlled environment agriculture (CEA) can potentially improve access to local, nutritious fruits and vegetables on a yearly basis, the greenhouse gas emissions associated with greenhouse production is five times higher than field-grown produce. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For this reason, Auburn researchers are embarking on a wide-ranging and ambitious mission to reimagine CEA as a more sustainable approach to food production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The project, \u201cReimagining Controlled Environment in a Low-Carbon World,\u201d is the focus of a $9.95 million grant awarded to Auburn by the U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s National Institute of Food and Agriculture\u2019s Sustainable Agriculture Systems program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCEA must be reimagined to become a sustainable approach to food production,\u201d said Brendan Higgins, associate professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering and project director. \u201cOur team\u2019s long-term goal is to transform CEA strategically, managerially, technologically and socially to position it as a viable food production system capable of producing sufficient and nutritious foods within the low-carbon economy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Auburn research team will implement four strategies to lower the carbon intensity of CEA: reduce demand for heating and cooling in CEA;
