Important data is vital too because it\u2019s necessary for quick decision-making. Can machines learn to provide both sets of data simultaneously? Yin Sun, associate professor in electrical and computer engineering, believes they can \u2014 and will prove it through his newest proposal, \u201cSemantic and Goal-oriented Status Updating for Inference, Monitoring, and Decision-Making,\u201d through a $516,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is a very special and important recognition of my work,\u201d Sun said. \u201cEarning an NSF CAREER Award is great recognition for the university, the college and our department and will further inspire our team of graduate students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sun becomes the department\u2019s third CAREER Award winner in three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs an administrator, it\u2019s been special to watch Dr. Sun\u2019s growth as a researcher and educator,\u201d said Mark Nelms, electrical and computer engineering department chair. \u201cDr. Sun is the embodiment of a scholar and educator who is committed to finding solutions to everyday technical problems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sun\u2019s proposal aims to use information-theoretic analyses and experimental studies to interpret how the freshness and semantics of information affect the performance of real-time inference, monitoring and decision-making systems; design new communications techniques and networking protocols for optimizing freshness\/semantics measures and system performance; and explore the benefits of signal-aware status updating that goes beyond Age of Information to additional performance gain.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fresh data is vital because it\u2019s timely.
