However, the Auburn Engineering Young Alumni Council has been working for more than 10 years to bridge that gap and show alumni that graduation is only the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2011, Jeff Stone, 1979 civil engineering alumnus, saw missed opportunities with skilled, eager alumni moving away without clear opportunities to stay involved with the college. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The idea for the council began with a simple question.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHow do we reach out to these young people and get them engaged?\u201d Stone asked himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Stone, the executive vice president at Brasfield &amp; Gorrie and Auburn Alumni Engineering Council member, took the idea to <\/span><span class=\"s1\">then-Dean of Engineering Chris Roberts and Apryl Mullins, who served as a development coordinator in engineering advancement at the time. First, a steering committee was assembled to identify a clear strategic plan for the council.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe went to those young people and asked, \u2018How do you want to be involved? What would that look like?\u2019 Over a few years, it evolved and became a little more structured,\u201d Stone said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mullins, now the assistant director of corporate relations in the Engineering Office of Career Development and Corporate Relations, continued the push for the progression of this young alumni-focused group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThrough working for the College of Engineering and the Auburn Alumni Association, I started to develop a passion for students and young alumni,\u201d Mullins said. \u201cI felt like there was a huge gap between graduation and people\u2019s first connection as an alum. This council was a passion project.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9977\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9977\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9977\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/yac3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/yac3-1.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/yac3-1-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/yac3-1-600x400.jpg 600w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/yac3-1-75x50.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9977\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>2014:<\/strong> The Young Alumni Council poses for a photo with then-Dean of Engineering Chris Roberts and the college\u2019s namesake, Samuel Ginn, at one of its earliest meetings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The inaugural meeting was held in May 2013, and the first council members were selected by the Alumni Engineering Council. Ben Carmichael, \u201900 electrical and computer engineering and \u201905 civil engineering, was chosen as the council\u2019s first-ever chair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I graduated, I saw that there was a gap in opportunities and a real need for this council,\u201d Carmichael said. \u201cWe wanted to create an avenue for young alumni to cultivate their affinity for Auburn while also serving. It was as simple as that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Carmichael, a business development manager in Southern Company Research &amp; Development, saw an active, enthusiastic group come together with ideas to engage students and other young alumni with Auburn. Soon, the council hosted mock interviews for students to practice their skills and social events in alumni hotspots like Birmingham and Atlanta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After graduating in 2008 in chemical engineering and moving to Houston, Rodmesia Clarke became an original member. Through serving on the networking committee and as the council\u2019s executive secretary, Clarke saw the ripple effect of its growing presence on campus and with students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs a college student, you look around and see all these names on the walls, and there can sometimes be a disconnect between you as a new graduate and those established alumni names,\u201d said Clarke, the director of asset management and governance at Enbridge Gas in Toronto. \u201cIt\u2019s good to have that visual presence of young alumni and see, \u2018OK, I can be engaged while I\u2019m building my career and the next phase of my life.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thanks to staggered membership in the early days, Clarke served for six years and witnessed even more growth. The council helped build her network and fulfill her values of giving and service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI owe Auburn so much,\u201d Clarke said. \u201cPlus, Auburn is such a magical place. When you remain active, you get to be part of the magic. Staying engaged makes Auburn more than just my alma mater \u2014 it makes me feel like part of the Auburn Family.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Michael Keyser also sees his service on the council as an avenue to \u2018give back\u2019 what Auburn gave him in terms of scholarships, his career and, most importantly, meeting his wife, Kelly, \u201915 nutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe feel like we have so much to be grateful for from the college,\u201d Keyser said. \u201cI feel very lucky to have opportunities to give back to the school that\u2019s given us so much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Keyser graduated from Auburn in 2015 with degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering. After moving to Mobile to work for Chevron, a friend invited him to come to campus and volunteer for mock interviews. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Though a young professional, he jumped at the opportunity to advise students. Keyser was selected for the council in 2021 and is now the executive vice chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9963\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9963\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9963\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/30807400258_02259ea723_o-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/30807400258_02259ea723_o-1.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/30807400258_02259ea723_o-1-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/30807400258_02259ea723_o-1-600x400.jpg 600w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/30807400258_02259ea723_o-1-75x50.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>2018:<\/strong> Parker Carpenter and John McCracken participate in the council\u2019s mock interview event, supporting students through career preparedness.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m proud of what the council does, period,\u201d said Keyser, a project manager at Mercedes-Benz in Birmingham. \u201cI think it\u2019s a unique group of people who have such a strong heart and passion for helping the college in whatever capacity necessary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Emily Traylor, \u201910 wireless software engineering, experienced the gap after graduation \u2014 unsure where to start her involvement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t until in 2016 when I was selected for the Young Alumni Council that I started to get more involved with the college,\u201d Traylor said. \u201cThat was a great way for me to get my foot in the door with alumni involvement and see what other opportunities there were.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She served on the council until 2022, including as executive chair for her final two years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She now serves on the Auburn Alumni Engineering Council, the Computer Science and Software Engineering Business Advisory Council and as a member of 100+ Women Strong. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to the opportunities the Young Alumni Council opened for her, Traylor recounts some of what she witnessed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI have so many great memories from my time on the council,\u201d said Traylor, the director of data and cybersecurity at Fullsteam. \u201cI remember in some of the first meetings I attended discussing the new concept of this building \u2014 the \u2018Brown-Kopel Engineering Student Achievement Center.\u2019 A few years later, we toured what was a construction zone, and now that building is a reality. Seeing that come to life is a great memory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Today, the 32 Young Alumni Council members meet biannually in the Brown-Kopel Center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These Young Alumni Council members each serve on one of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">five working committees: communications and marketing, giving and engagement, mentoring, networking and professional development.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9864\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9864\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/YAC_BK-Tour.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/YAC_BK-Tour.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2024\/05\/YAC_BK-Tour-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>2019:<\/strong> The Young Alumni Council tours the construction site of the Brown-Kopel Engineering Student Achievement Center that would open later that year. The center houses all student support services from recruiting and scholarships to career development resources.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Each committee works with respective on-campus offices, all in pursuit of the original purpose set at the first planning meeting in 2011: \u201cTo engage engineering young alumni with the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering by providing programming that will appeal to their volunteer interests, their networking interests and their philanthropic interests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to Mullins, it\u2019s important to establish a purpose and strategy in every program the council creates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBecause the council took time to develop its purpose and strategy, it has been able to stay the course as it has grown,\u201d she said. \u201cLaying that groundwork allowed them to have a clear direction.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2023, the council hosted more than 100 students for mock interviews and more than 200 young alumni at networking events in Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville and virtually. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The council\u2019s endowed scholarship continues to support an engineering student each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Molly Mathews, \u201915 industrial and systems engineering, currently serves as the executive chair of the council. Mathews became a member of Auburn Engineering\u2019s 100+ Women Strong program after her graduation and joined the council in 2017 on the networking committee. The council connects young alumni through networking events at places such as Topgolf in major cities including Atlanta, Birmingham, Houston and Huntsville.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWith the Young Alumni Council, we\u2019re able to give people a discernible way to give their time and talent,\u201d Mathews said. \u201cIt takes the distant idea of being an involved alumnus and gives you a real way to get involved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And involved, they are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOne year, one of our members flew in from Japan,\u201d she said. \u201cI kid you not. I was like, \u2018Are you serious?\u2019 That just tells you how dedicated our members are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Carmichael sees this dedication as a success story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI look at what the council is doing now \u2014 the people who are involved, how they\u2019re involved and the broader net they have cast to get others involved \u2014 and it\u2019s good to see,\u201d Carmichael said. \u201cWe all get opportunities to try and make a difference in those things we care about, some turn out all right, and some don\u2019t. It\u2019s not often we can look back and think, \u2018wow, this really came together well.\u2019 I think that is true of the Auburn Engineering Young Alumni Council.
