ASME honors mechanical engineering professor emeritus for outstanding achievements
If you enjoy cool laptops, long-lasting cell phone batteries and air conditioning, you might want to tip your cap toward Sushil Bhavnani.
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) definitely just did.
At its recent InterPACK 2024 Conference and Exhibition in San Jose, California, the ASME awarded Bhavnani its esteemed Allan Kraus Thermal Management Medal, which is annually bestowed for exceptional achievements in the thermal management of electronic systems.
Bhavnani certainly meets the criteria.
The professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, who thrice won the Outstanding Mechanical Engineering Faculty Member award before retiring in 2023, has a long string of accolades for achievement in the field of thermal science and engineering that continues to grow even in retirement.
Bhavnani's influence extends beyond research and into educational leadership, perhaps best demonstrated in his development in 1999 of a groundbreaking graduate-level course in thermal management of electronics.
"The course was significant since it was offered synchronously to students at three campuses long before video conferencing apps came on the scene," Bhavnani said. "That project was the result of a partnership I was fortunate enough to forge with two esteemed colleagues who have sadly passed away, Yogendra Joshi and Avram Bar-Cohen.
"Those sorts of friendships and partnerships have, over these past few decades, also led to service on national conference leadership teams and an opportunity to mentor several younger researchers."
Bhavnani also continues to provide expertise in thermal management of electronics through work with Fairfax, Virginia-based ECS Tech, specifically supporting the Department of Defense's DARPA Microsystems Technology Office.
"Receiving the Kraus medal has been another humbling experience, especially since I know most of the past recipients, and their myriad accomplishments," Bhavnani said.
