{"id":10609,"date":"2025-12-06T12:20:03","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T12:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=10609"},"modified":"2025-12-09T15:35:51","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T15:35:51","slug":"computer-science-and-software-software-developed-by-assistant-professor-being-used-in-breakthrough-technique-to-identify-leukemia-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=10609","title":{"rendered":"Computer Science and Software: Software developed by assistant professor being used in breakthrough technique to identify leukemia cells"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_10613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10613\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10613 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/12\/Computer-Science-and-Software-Feature.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/12\/Computer-Science-and-Software-Feature.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/12\/Computer-Science-and-Software-Feature-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/12\/Computer-Science-and-Software-Feature-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/12\/Computer-Science-and-Software-Feature-75x50.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Haynes Heaton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Haynes Heaton, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, has developed software likely to change the standard of care for leukemia patients undergoing bone marrow transplants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Heaton, a computer scientist, computational biologist and medical doctor, and collaborators at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center at the University of Washington were awarded a $3.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for their project, \u201cA Compass for Those With Relapsed Leukemia After Transplants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By using his software, \u201cCellector,\u201d Dr. Heaton and fellow researchers hope to replace current diagnostics for post-bone marrow transplant relapse monitoring with single-cell RNA sequencing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cellector makes statistical distributions from thousands of data points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Using a beta-binomial iterative anomaly detection system, Cellector accurately distinguishes donor bone marrow cells from user bone marrow cells among transplant recipients to within .05%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is important because if a patient\u2019s blood is being generated from his or her own bone marrow \u2014 their own genotype \u2014 then that person very well might be having a leukemia relapse, which is highly deadly,\u201d Heaton said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Heaton\u2019s latest research project allows him to combine his disciplines and develop a computational diagnostic tool capable of saving lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe basic research that I do is empowering other people to do better research that is tied to DNA sequencing, and we will have health impacts down the line,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-16410580\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Haynes Heaton, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, has developed software likely to change the standard of care for leukemia patients undergoing bone marrow transplants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":68,"featured_media":10613,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1057],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Computer Science and Software: Software developed by assistant professor being used in breakthrough technique to identify leukemia cells &raquo;
