{"id":10611,"date":"2025-12-06T11:14:32","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T11:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=10611"},"modified":"2025-12-09T15:36:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T15:36:05","slug":"electrical-and-computer-assistant-professor-revolutionizes-chiplet-designs-earns-nsf-career-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=10611","title":{"rendered":"Electrical and Computer: Assistant professor revolutionizes chiplet designs, earns NSF CAREER Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_10620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10620\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10620 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/12\/ECE_MedhiSadiPhotos-8-of-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/12\/ECE_MedhiSadiPhotos-8-of-12.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/12\/ECE_MedhiSadiPhotos-8-of-12-768x519.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2025\/12\/ECE_MedhiSadiPhotos-8-of-12-75x50.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mehdi Sadi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Traditional monolithic chip designs in everyday devices such as cellphones and laptops face significant limitations due to high manufacturing costs and size constraints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mehdi Sadi, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, is addressing these challenges posed by modern artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, which demand large silicon areas for optimal performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">His project, \u201cOptimizing the Next Frontiers of Chiplet-based Designs in Advanced Packaging,\u201d develops AI\/machine learning-assisted co-design methodologies to enhance the power, performance, reliability and cost-efficiency of next-generation AI hardware using multi-tier chiplet architectures, while also creating educational resources and fostering a skilled workforce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The result: smaller chips with greater performance and energy efficiency \u2014 at a reduced cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For his work, Sadi earned a National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early CAREER Award, drawing $512,000 over the course of five years for his research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As described by the NSF, the Faculty Early Career Development Program offers the foundation\u2019s most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs always, CAREER awards are very competitive,\u201d said Sadi. \u201cThe research tasks must address an important and timely problem worthy of long-term research investment and effort. The proposed solutions need to be innovative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cRecently, semiconductors and computer chip technology have become critical U.S. national interests. My research is at the intersection of Al\/deep learning-based optimization and semiconductor technology for next-generation AI hardware design.
