{"id":1447,"date":"2012-06-07T15:21:32","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T15:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=1447"},"modified":"2012-06-07T18:05:38","modified_gmt":"2012-06-07T18:05:38","slug":"they-came-from-auburn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=1447","title":{"rendered":"They Came from Auburn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new book chronicling the history of Auburn University\u2019s College of Engineering is slated for release this summer. <em>They Came from Auburn: A History of Engineering<\/em> <em>in the New South<\/em> spans the period from 1857 to the present. \u201cIt will be the definitive history of Auburn\u2019s College of Engineering,\u201d says author Art Slotkin, \u201868 aerospace engineering. \u201cIt goes all the way back to the East Alabama Male College when they had just an engineering course,\u00a0not a degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A full degree in engineering was not offered until theschool became a land-grant college in 1872. This, and many other stories documenting engineering\u2019s development as a college, as well as successes and struggles throughout its more than 100-year history, are featured in the book. When the college celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009, Dean Larry Benefield asked Slotkin to mark the occasion by writing a history of Auburn Engineering.
