{"id":2152,"date":"2013-06-06T11:45:36","date_gmt":"2013-06-06T11:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=2152"},"modified":"2013-06-06T21:43:24","modified_gmt":"2013-06-06T21:43:24","slug":"into-the-lab-industrial-and-systems-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=2152","title":{"rendered":"Into the Lab: Industrial and systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3782\/8881865266_522dee0cc3_z.jpg\" alt=\"MRI\" width=\"512\" height=\"366\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Working under the direction of faculty member <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.auburn.edu\/insy\/staff\/faculty.html#sesek\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Richard Sesek<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Celal Gungor<\/strong> and <strong>Ruoliang \u201cRio\u201d Tang<\/strong> studied the relationship between lower back geometry to a subject\u2019s gross anthropometry, or characteristics such as their height, weight, gender or age. Gungor and Tang studied 3T MRI scans taken at Auburn\u2019s MRI Research Center to better understand these relationships, which can be used to help improve ergonomic modeling that often relies on average values for the size and position of low back structures. Their early testing with a database of jobs that have known health outcomes indicated promising improvements in risk estimation. They also investigated the intervertebral disc cross-sectional area as further means to improve ergonomic modeling. Their work was funded by two grants from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and was named the best research presentation among fellow Dillon-Carnahan programs at the Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety\u2019s research symposium in April. The center\u2019s Dillon-Carnahan Research Program promotes and expands support for new investigators\u2019 research.
