{"id":2982,"date":"2014-07-10T15:06:17","date_gmt":"2014-07-10T15:06:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=2982"},"modified":"2014-07-16T18:36:35","modified_gmt":"2014-07-16T18:36:35","slug":"movin-on-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=2982","title":{"rendered":"Movin&#8217; on Mars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"ME\" href=\"http:\/\/eng.auburn.edu\/programs\/mech\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mechanical engineering<\/a> seniors <strong>Jourdan Beaumont<\/strong>, <strong>Bradley Boyett<\/strong>, <strong>Taryn Greene<\/strong>, <strong>Robert Northup<\/strong>, <strong>Shawn Roades<\/strong>, <strong>Jacob Sparkman<\/strong>, <strong>Ryan Whitmore<\/strong> and <strong>Katie Zoladz<\/strong> placed fourth out of 46 college teams competing in the<a title=\"NASA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/roverchallenge\/home\/#.U8WaLPldVBk\" target=\"_blank\"> NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge<\/a> held at the U.S. Space &amp; Rocket Center in Huntsville this spring. The competition focused on NASA\u2019s plans to explore planets, moons, asteroids and comets, with teams instructed to design, construct and test technologies for mobility devices to perform in these different environments. Each <a href=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2014\/07\/movin-on-mars.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2946 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2014\/07\/movin-on-mars-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"movin on mars\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2014\/07\/movin-on-mars-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2014\/07\/movin-on-mars-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>team\u2019s vehicle had to be capable of overcoming large obstacles and able to fit inside a 5\u2019x 5\u2019x 5\u2019 cube, in addition to being operated by two drivers \u2013 one male, one female. A competition rule change eliminated the use of pneumatic tires, which the Auburn team overcame by using solid rubber tires. The students spent much of the spring semester in the Wiggins Mechanical Engineering Hall machine shops building parts for their rover, which consists almost entirely of steel tubing with aluminum components and carbon fiber seats of their own creation.
