{"id":5139,"date":"2018-05-18T01:23:53","date_gmt":"2018-05-18T01:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=5139"},"modified":"2018-05-21T19:31:59","modified_gmt":"2018-05-21T19:31:59","slug":"jason-clark-berkeley-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=5139","title":{"rendered":"Jason Clark: Berkeley, California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2018\/05\/Clark-graphic-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5229\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2018\/05\/Clark-graphic-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"832\" height=\"512\" \/><\/a>For Jason Clark, navigating downtown Auburn is a breeze compared to his time as a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, where a 20-minute drive to campus could turn into two-hour gridlock in the Bay Area\u2019s infamous traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Having joined Auburn University as an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in August 2017, Clark finds a lot of upside to Auburn besides the traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The Alabama Micro\/Nano Science and Technology Center, housed at Auburn, has everything he needs to advance his research in microelectromechanical systems, microscopic devices that integrate electrical and mechanical elements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of institutions don\u2019t have a micro lab, and that\u2019s one of the things that stood out to me about Auburn,\u201d Clark said.<\/p>\n<p>Science and engineering were a natural draw for Clark, who created his own toys out of paper and tape as a child. He eventually started drawing the inner workings of machines, even though he didn\u2019t understand the physics at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would try to imagine how things might work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Now as a junior faculty member in engineering, he finds the university is deeply committed to ensuring his success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had two faculty members from different departments volunteer my first week to be my mentor,\u201d Clark said. \u201cThat was a pleasant surprise to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in a military family, Clark spent his formative years in California, Washington, Alaska and Germany, and he is enjoying his new adventure in Alabama and exploring life in the South.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody here has been really nice, even strangers on the street,\u201d he said. \u201cI guess it\u2019s infectious.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Jason Clark, navigating downtown Auburn is a breeze compared to his time as a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, where a 20-minute drive to campus could turn into two-hour gridlock in the Bay Area\u2019s infamous traffic.
