The small town\u2019s calmness and its renowned engineering program enthralled Narayanan.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous offers from universities were awaiting him, but he was steadfast on sending an application to Auburn for a faculty position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the interview, all the faculty took me out to Momma Goldberg\u2019s for lunch, so right away I was impressed by the department\u2019s kindness,\u201d Narayanan said.<\/p>\n<p>After getting the job, he <em>discovered<\/em> Auburn students were reflecting his passion for learning even during his 8 a.m. classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll students attended the early class, and that made me love their dedication,\u201d Narayanan said. \u201cYou don\u2019t see that everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Equalling their <em>dedication,<\/em> he became chair of the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Auburn University in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He plans on furthering the department\u2019s success, and ensuring it excels on a national level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re the top department in Alabama, and I think we\u2019re capable of being one of the top departments in the nation,\u201d Narayanan said.<\/p>\n<p>As his department flourishes, so do the electric-pink azaleas sprouting across Narayanan\u2019s beloved campus; enlivened by a Southern heat that rivals the scorching, coconut tree weather of India.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hari Narayanan smiles as he recounts the vibrant green coconut trees sprawling bountifully throughout Kerala, India, in his childhood. \u201cThe English translation of Kerala is \u2018land of the coconut tree,\u2019 so my memories involve eating coconuts and playing near the trees in warm weather,\u201d Narayanan said.
