{"id":5869,"date":"2019-05-31T14:48:03","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T14:48:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=5869"},"modified":"2019-06-06T18:22:34","modified_gmt":"2019-06-06T18:22:34","slug":"dynamic-diversity-easy-choice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=5869","title":{"rendered":"Dynamic Diversity: Easy Choice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you get Kevin Nixon talking about the best decision he made during college, it\u2019s hard to get him to stop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to go into the best engineering program I could find, but I didn\u2019t even know about the Academic Excellence Program (AEP) until after I applied to Auburn,\u201d Nixon said.&nbsp; \u201cHad I known about it, it would have made my college choice even easier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nixon graduated with a chemical engineering degree from the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering in 2018. Without AEP?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s not sure he would have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt AEP, there are facilitators who are tutors and who are also there to provide any mentorship or help,\u201d he said. \u201cI had upperclassmen helping me with chemistry, physics, calculus and any math or science course I needed help in. There was always an upperclassman who could lend assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Academic Excellence Program Director Cordelia Brown nods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the big things that comes to mind with Kevin was how he took advantage of every opportunity we provided,\u201d Brown said. \u201cBut he was also willing to give his time to help others because he saw how valuable it was to him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AEP started in 1996. Brown has been director since 2015.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAEP focuses on enhancing the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students through a learning community, collaborative groups, interactive learning labs and professional development opportunities\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the updated wording for the program\u2019s latest invitation to attend the upcoming Camp War Eagle AEP breakout sessions. She and AEP program coordinator Eric Hall are starting to send the invitations out to prospective students and high school admissions offices. They have plenty of other recruitment tools. Campus tours, student ambassadors&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut that\u2019s how Kevin found out about us,\u201d Brown said. \u201cAt one of the breakout sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a pleasant surprise, Nixon said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot many schools even have programs like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt feels like family. It feels like a home away from home. It\u2019s that home atmosphere that gets the students to talk about anything, especially to Dr. Brown. Students can go in there to talk about life in general, and she\u2019s always there to listen and provide advice if requested.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown\u2019s go-to advice? Get involved. Brown regularly urges new AEP members to sign up for the Success Strategies Course and learn about campus resources that can ease the transition from high school, to attend the Sunday tutorial and professional development sessions, to join the Learning Community, which this year has 83 students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"688\" src=\"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-31-at-2.36.52-PM.png\" alt=\"Cordelia Brown talks with students. \" class=\"wp-image-5870\" \/><figcaption>Academic Excellence Program Director Cordelia Brown.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe try to get students to see that this is a larger university and a larger college of engineering, and that you\u2019re going to have to be able to work through lots and lots of problem sets and think critically,\u201d Brown said. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy, but at the same time, there are others who are going through the same thing, who are going to the same classes and having to study for the same tests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Nixon, AEP\u2019s approach to collaboration was the driving force that not only got him to graduation, but inspired his impressive r\u00e9sum\u00e9.
