{"id":658,"date":"2011-10-20T12:33:36","date_gmt":"2011-10-20T12:33:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=658"},"modified":"2011-11-04T18:22:38","modified_gmt":"2011-11-04T18:22:38","slug":"into-the-lab-chemical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=658","title":{"rendered":"Into the Lab: Chemical"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Faculty members <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.auburn.edu\/users\/ashurwr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Ashurst<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.auburn.edu\/users\/davisva\/\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia Davis<\/a>, along with chemical engineering alumnus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/ces\/chbe\/faculty_staff\/kitchens_c.html\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Kitchens<\/a>, who is an assistant professor at Clemson University, have been awarded a National Science Foundation grant for their project, \u201cCollaborative Research: Processing and Properties of Cellulose Films for MEMS Applications.\u201d The researchers will investigate the feasibility of cellulose nanocrystals as an alternative to silicon for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). If successful, their research will enable renewable cellulose materials to be used as an inexpensive alternative to high-cost electronic grade silicon, the current industry standard for advanced sensor platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The structure, mechanical properties, surface chemistry and ability to self-assemble into defined architectures over multiple scales makes cellulose nanocrystals solid building blocks for advanced materials. As part of the team\u2019s research, cellulose nanocrystals will be processed to form dry films and will then be fabricated into devices using lithography and etching.
