{"id":7145,"date":"2020-06-07T15:45:12","date_gmt":"2020-06-07T15:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=7145"},"modified":"2021-02-03T19:51:08","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T19:51:08","slug":"transportation-innovation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=7145","title":{"rendered":"Transportation Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">For researchers in <a href=\"http:\/\/gavlab.auburn.edu\/\">Auburn University\u2019s GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Laboratory<\/a>, prepping autonomous vehicles outside in Alabama\u2019s elements \u2013 from the sweltering summer sun to pop-up thunderstorms \u2013 has become a near daily occurrence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Whether researchers are debugging algorithms, installing sensors or running data analyses, much of the GAVLAB\u2019s work is done outdoors \u2013 and subject to Mother Nature\u2019s whims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Thanks to the addition of a sophisticated new autonomous vehicle research facility at Auburn\u2019s National Center for Asphalt Technology test track, that has changed. The facility provides a garage with multiple bays and lifts for commercial trucks and passenger vehicles, office space for researchers, a conference room and an observation area overlooking NCAT\u2019s 1.7-mile oval test track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">The building is one of the few autonomous research facilities in the nation attached to a test track.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o3K-Xoh1Fic\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe fact that we have our own test track where we can run autonomous vehicles and autonomous testing attached to this facility I think is an unbelievably unique asset,\u201d said David Bevly, the Bill and Lana McNair Distinguished Professor of mechanical engineering and co-director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/gavlab.auburn.edu\/\">GAVLAB<\/a> along with assistant research professor Scott Martin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Since Bevly joined the Auburn Engineering faculty in 2001, the GAVLAB has built a strong reputation in autonomous vehicle navigation and developed a broad sponsored research portfolio, with projects ranging from the Department of Defense and the Federal Highway Administration to many private industry partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Autonomous Vehicle Research Facility\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/auburnengineers\/albums\/72157718081774736\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50887991441_423d03a5ce_z.jpg\" alt=\"Autonomous Vehicle Research Facility\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">With various sponsors visiting each month, the facility\u2019s planned observation area gives the GAVLAB team a high-quality space to demonstrate its research. Bevly\u2019s group has also conducted demonstrations for legislators and the Alabama Department of Transportation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cIt&#8217;s a great facility for us as a team, but also allows us to showcase our work,\u201d Bevly said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">With a growing research thrust in transportation engineering, the autonomous research facility also demonstrates Auburn\u2019s commitment to supporting these research initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cDave and his GAVLAB team are one of our top research groups on campus, and their work has elevated Auburn to an internationally prominent position in navigation and vehicle dynamics for autonomous vehicles,\u201d said Jeff Suhling, the Quina Professor and department chair for mechanical engineering. \u201cOur department is proud to commit resources along with the College of Engineering to support high-impact researchers.
