{"id":8645,"date":"2022-05-13T01:15:32","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T01:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=8645"},"modified":"2022-05-16T14:31:27","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T14:31:27","slug":"gary-bikes-bama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/?p=8645","title":{"rendered":"Gary Bikes Bama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gary Bikes Bama\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VyFtxZwhefs?start=15&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, April 23, 1,061 people from 44 states, led by two-sport legend Bo Jackson, participated in the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/bobikesbama.com\/\">Bo Bikes Bama<\/a> charity ride benefiting the Governor&#8217;s Emergency Relief Fund.<\/p>\n<p>One of them was former Auburn basketball player and engineering alumnus Gary Godfrey.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, he didn&#8217;t get the memo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Godfrey, a 1986 industrial engineering graduate who played alongside Charles Barkley as the Tigers reached the Elite 8 before embarking on a highly successful 30-year career in logistics and brand management consulting, has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS degrades nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It causes loss of muscle control, paralysis. He can\u2019t move. He can\u2019t talk. He\u2019s not supposed to be able to do things like complete a 20-mile bike ride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But he did, thanks to 13 students in Auburn University\u2019s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering who said \u201cyes\u201d to the challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A week earlier, a senior design team comprised of eight mechanical engineering seniors, an industrial master\u2019s student volunteer, three mechanical engineering graduate teaching assistants and an undergraduate teaching assistant completed a custom student-designed adaptive bike that could accommodate Godfrey, and the vehicle\u2019s operator, Chuck Smith, an experienced cyclist who has known Godfrey for years. The team was supervised by assistant mechanical engineering professor Kyle Schulze and mechanical engineering lecturer Jordan Roberts, who also serves as the director of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering\u2019s Design and Manufacturing Lab.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8648\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8648\" style=\"width: 1198px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8648\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2022\/05\/52023371027_c2802bcabc_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1198\" height=\"799\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2022\/05\/52023371027_c2802bcabc_c.jpg 799w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2022\/05\/52023371027_c2802bcabc_c-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2022\/05\/52023371027_c2802bcabc_c-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2022\/05\/52023371027_c2802bcabc_c-75x50.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1198px) 100vw, 1198px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thirteen mechanical engineering seniors worked nearly non-stop for four months in order to complete Godfrey&#8217;s custom bicycle in time for the Bo Bikes Bama charity ride on April 23.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The bike is a modified cargo ebike with a custom-built frame that includes a hot-swappable battery for continuous operation. Godfrey sat securely in the front of the bike between two 20-inch tires pushed by the powered rear wheel and was monitored by three primary sensors \u2014 two GoPro cameras and a \u201ctwitch switch\u201d \u2014 that allowed his support team to monitor his vital signs during the race. The switch was attached to Godfrey\u2019s cheek and connected to a light and siren system allowing him to signal the team via the slight facial mobility he maintains had he been in distress. He was secured to a racing seat with a five-point harness and his head was supported with a HANS device typical of motorsports safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBuilding the bike for Gary was a great experience because it was an example of a real-world design and build process \u2014 we were working on a tight schedule with a big group,\u201d said mechanical engineering senior Joshua McCreight, the project\u2019s team lead, one of several team members who rode alongside Godfrey. \u201cI\u2019m really pleased we got it done in time for Gary to participate in Bo Bikes Bama. We were committed to finishing it, not only because it was our senior design project, but because it\u2019s such a great way to share the positive impact of Gary\u2019s story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gary\u2019s story \u2014 at least this chapter \u2014 started in late 2018. One day, he was just weaker. He was shooting hoops. Then he wasn\u2019t. He couldn\u2019t get the ball to the rim. For a 6-foot-8 former college basketball player, that was strange. He went to a doctor. He got weaker. Godfrey played for the Tigers under head coach Sonny Smith in the 1980s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, he got the diagnosis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It was almost a relief. He knew what he was working with. He knew what he would be living with \u2014 emphasis on the living. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI had a choice,\u201d Godfrey said through the text-to-speech app on the computer he controls with his eyes. \u201cI could spend my energy on fighting ALS, or I could focus on living with ALS. I chose the latter. That\u2019s when all of my Auburn basketball experiences kicked in. What did I have to do to stay on the court \u2014 which probably is not the best metaphor since I wasn\u2019t on the court that much during my career at Auburn \u2014 or in this case, what do I have to do to live a full life with ALS?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cycling was on the full-life list. He\u2019d been an avid bike rider before ALS. He\u2019d done Bo Bikes Bama twice before ALS. No reason to stop now. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAfter I retired, I wanted to get back in shape,\u201d Godfrey said. \u201cI took up cycling. It became my passion. I was riding three to four times per week, riding between 200 to 250 miles. I lost over 80 pounds. I became a MAMIL \u2014 a Middle Aged Man in Lycra.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8650\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8650\" style=\"width: 1125px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8650\" src=\"http:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2022\/05\/Carol_Gary_Godfrey.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1125\" height=\"633\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2022\/05\/Carol_Gary_Godfrey.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2022\/05\/Carol_Gary_Godfrey-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ecm.eng.auburn.edu\/wp\/emag\/files\/2022\/05\/Carol_Gary_Godfrey-674x380.jpg 674w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1125px) 100vw, 1125px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carol and Gary Godfrey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Godfrey and his wife, Carol, a fellow 1986 Auburn industrial engineering graduate who led a distinguished career in marketing and product development for Southwire Company, first approached the college about the project late last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI had ridden in Bo Bikes Bama a few times before my ALS diagnosis,\u201d Godfrey said. \u201cI read about a man from Colorado, named Mike Cimbura. Mike was an avid cyclist before he was diagnosed with ALS. He didn\u2019t let ALS prevent him from riding. Mike teamed with Zach Yendra who built him a bike that could accommodate his needs and still go up to 60 miles per hour through the Colorado mountains. That inspired me to do the same thing for Bo Bikes Bama.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gary showed a picture of Cimbura\u2019s bike to Carol. He typed out \u201cI want to ask Auburn Engineering students to build me something like this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was like, \u2018I don\u2019t know about going 60 miles per hour, Gary,\u2019 we might need to slow that down,\u2019\u201d Carol said. \u201cBut still, he always talks about living with ALS. Folks often ask me why we\u2019re doing things like returning to bike riding or pushing to be at Auburn basketball and football games or at a meeting of the Auburn Alumni Engineering Council. I guess their rationale is that Gary has ALS, can\u2019t move or talk or breathe on his own, or this, or that. And yet, what I\u2019d tell you is that Gary\u2019s mind is sharper than ever, allowing him to dream up ideas like riding a bike again, and some amazingly bright young Auburn engineers were along on this ride with us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Amazingly bright, said Schulze, doesn\u2019t even begin to describe it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSenior design projects typically take two semesters, but, with the way this worked out, the students had barely four months to finish,\u201d he said. \u201cTo be honest, what typically happens in situations like this is that the advisors end up having to finish the job because the students just don\u2019t have the technical know-how to meet the deadline. Any senior design professor out there would look at that bike and assume that\u2019s what happened here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But it didn\u2019t. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cJordan and I looked at each other just before the ride started and said \u2018they don\u2019t need us,\u2019\u201d Schulze said. \u201cThat\u2019s the biggest compliment I can give them. I couldn\u2019t be prouder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Neither could Auburn University President Chris Roberts, former dean of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis project and this day represents the full circle of the Auburn mission of education, research and outreach,\u201d Roberts said after powering Godfrey on a short demonstration of the bike\u2019s capabilities before the ride. \u201cThe bike ran incredibly well. I\u2019m so proud of these students and so happy for Gary. But it\u2019s still there. It\u2019s the one physical form of expression the disease hasn\u2019t taken from him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It was there at the starting line.
