There\u2019s a test in reinforced concrete this afternoon. It won\u2019t be easy. But she wouldn\u2019t have it any other way. Because challenges, says Afrah Khan, are opportunities. And that\u2019s what she loves about Auburn \u2014 the opportunities. The opportunity to teach in different subjects, the opportunities to do research in world-class facilities. <\/span><\/p>\n
\u201cThe new structures lab is amazing,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m getting my master\u2019s in construction engineering but I\u2019m taking supplemental classes in structural engineering because I want to challenge myself, and the opportunities Auburn provides for that are so impressive\u201d \u2014 even more impressive than the former LSU soccer standout may have realized. <\/span><\/p>\n
This morning, she went online and found a doctoral student in Turkey studying the same things \u2014 tensile stress, portlandite, all that stuff. She sent him some questions. He sent her a question, too. <\/span><\/p>\n
\u201cOh, wow \u2014 you go to Auburn?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
\u201cI guess it\u2019s not really that shocking,\u201d Khan said. \u201cAuburn has a well-respected civil engineering program. Still, here\u2019s a guy in Turkey impressed that I go to Auburn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
After graduation, Khan wants to start her own construction company. Modular homes, she says \u2014 that\u2019s the future. <\/span><\/p>\n
\u201cModular homes let you add on, take away, and constantly change your house with what suits the progression of your life,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s the trend I want to focus on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
She just has to pass that test first. <\/span><\/p>\n
